According to tradition, the earliest icon was written/painted by St. Luke. Icons are said to be "written" because they are seen as theology the way Scripture is. That is, they accurately represent the faith of the Church. Icons have their origin in the funerary portraits of the Egyptians. These portraits were literally likenesses of the deceased. However, the images used in religious icons are symbolic in nature. Icons traditionally depict the people and events from the Bible. |
